Dr. Nancy DeJarnette, Associate Professor, is the Director of Elementary Education and Director of Accreditation in the Graduate School of Education at the University of Bridgeport. She holds an Ed.D. in Teaching and Learning from Liberty University in Lynchburg, VA. Her research interests involve incorporating STEM initiatives into the elementary curriculum as well as improving elementary Literacy instruction.
Her workshop topic is 'Elementary Engineering: Addressing the E & M in STEM through parachute design'. This workshop will model a complete hands-on engineering design challenge where participants create a drag system (parachute) to land a payload (spacecraft) on Mars. Constraints provided include materials, budget, and factors related to the Martian atmosphere. Participants will work in teams of two to plan, design, build, test and improve their parachutes. Math will be emphasized through maintaining a budget, tracking drop data, and calculating the surface area of the parachutes.
