Dr. Ching-Fu Lan is an educator, researcher and educational innovator at EdLab, Columbia University, and founder of Citizen Invention (CitizenInvention.com). As an experienced qualitative researcher and educator who works extensively with K-12 and adult learners, he appreciates the human-centered focus of design thinking to foster creativity, and has used this approach in workshops for educators to create innovative solutions to various problems. Combining his latest interests in maker technologies, design thinking and democratic education, Dr. Lan is currently exploring the creative experience of everyday invention and emerging trend of democratization of invention.
His topic is 'Creative STEAM: Tinkering with Light, Sound and Motion". Tinkering is a playful way to discover new insights on maker materials. Tinkering activities are hands-on, open-ended, experimental and iterative, and they can promote divergent thinking. In this workshop, we will learn about modular electronic building kits and use tinkering approach to create artful projects that feature light, sound and/or motion. We will then reflect on how tinkering can foster creativity.
